What is Rally?
Rally involves you and your dog working as a team to navigate a course with numbered signs indicating different exercises to perform... a sort of 'obedience exercise obstacle course' including simple exercises (like heel, sit, down, stay, recall etc).
Rally is less strict than traditional obedience and handlers may give encouragement and cues to the dog throughout the course. Judges are not only looking for how you perform the exercise at each sign, but they are also looking for loose leads, happy dogs and good teamwork!
Rally is fun – no matter what experience level. It's easy to get involved and provides a great opportunity for dogs and their guardians to bond while showcasing their skills. It is low impact and any dog may take part (any breed, pedigree, cross breed, rescue, any size, any age above 6 months with no upper age limited).
More information can be found on the Kennel Club website.
Competing
Dogs entered for competitions must be registered on either The Kennel Club Breed Register or Activity Register and must be a minimum of 6 months of age to take part in levels 1 or 2 classes and 12 months of age for level 3 upwards.
At the first two levels, levels 1 and 2, dogs compete on a lead and a loose lead is emphasised. The handler may give verbal commands and encouragement throughout as necessary. Physical or harsh verbal correction is strictly penalised. More advanced levels (levels 3 and above) require dogs to compete off lead.
Each dog/handler team enters the ring with a perfect score of 200 points. Deductions are scored based on the exercise requirements and the scoring guidelines. Deductions are made in increments from a minimum of 1 point up to maximum 5 point deduction in relation to any one fault.
You can find details of upcoming competitions on Rally News' showdiary.
